Mactan-Cebu International Airport - New International Terminal

Mactan-Cebu International Airport - the gateway to the Visayas and Southern Philippines, is the second largest airport facility in the country with an annually growing number of passengers. In 2017, 11 million passengers, both domestic and international passed through our doors to access their destinations.

With a total of 25 International destinations, 30 destinations and with 26 partner airline carriers, Mactan-Cebu Airport is no longer just a secondary airport. It is viable choice that connects Cebu to the rest of the Philippines and to the world.

Hong Kong-based Integrated Design Associates (IDA), which has previously worked on projects at Beijing Capital, Delhi-Indira Gandhi and Hong Kong airports, forms part of MCIA Terminal's design team. Envisioned with a unique design that demonstrates the warmth and friendliness of the local culture, the project is set to transform the local airports into a world-clas facility and resort-gateway.

The most recognizable element of the terminal is the dynamic elegance and lightness of the roof. The structure is composed of an array of glulam arches, which form the roof curvature and define its geometry and modularity. The arches span every 30 meters, which enables Terminal 2 to be as column-free as possible.

The internal spaces is enclosed by a light and transparent glazed facade. The arch facade is 15 meters tall and is accentuated by vertical U channels. The timber arches become the main element in the creation of a dramatic internal space, with sleek geometric and dynamic perspectives, where the undulating roof is reminiscent of the waves of the seas around Mactan, Cebu Island. 

From the project that started in 2016, the MCIA is set to be the second largest airport in the Philippines. Terminal 2 is designed to handle uo to 8 million international passengers per year after a period of 10 years.  

MCIA Terminal 2 is a three-floor building with a total 65,000 square meters of space. With a goal to be a green building, the sustainable and energy-sufficient airport terminal looks to be the world's friendliest airport terminal, showcasing the warmth and hospitality of Cebuanos. 

The recognizable element is the roof that gives a nod to ocean waves and the Cebuano heritage making as it is made of an array of gulam arches. The 26-meter-high ceiling promotes good air circulation and creates a fresher, cooler environment significantly reducing the terminals need for air conditioning.

The new airport will also feature an impregnable 3-layer glass wall system to bring in natural light and deflect heat, keeping the interiors cool and well-lit. It's also an environment-friendly solution, as its helps lower the terminal's carbon footprint!

President RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE led the inauguration of the newly built terminal of the MCIA. The president unveiled the marker upon his arrival and was given a tour of the facilities inside the airport.

The world class Terminal of MCIA is Asia's First Resort Airport and set to be opened this coming July 2018.
